For lighting rental companies
Patch changing rigs without rebuilding the show logic
Import common fixtures from Open Fixture Library, QLC+, DDF Library, and Avolites D4, then use MCP to patch the job and fill gaps for unusual equipment. Tags let proven effects follow roles such as wash, beam, or stage left when the inventory changes.
Start with the equipment list
Import known fixtures, then patch the job through MCP
Search Open Fixture Library, QLC+, the DDF Library, and Avolites D4 for the fixtures on this job, or import Open Fixture Library JSON or QLC+ .qxf files. Give a compatible AI client the fixture list, addresses, universes, and tags. Through MCP, it can search the merged catalogs, import matching Open Fixture Library, QLC+, or DDF profiles, and create the devices in the open project. If a rare fixture is still missing, provide its mode and channel table so the client can build a definition first.
Review the patch and channel mapping before enabling output.
UNILIGHTER DESKTOP ONLYOperate groups, not device IDs
Build it once. Point it at the fixtures on this job.
Name the role with a tag such as #stage-wash or #beam. Scenes, animations, and node graphs can control that tag instead of individual devices. On the next setup, assign the same tag to the available fixtures; supported properties carry across.
Useful before the console project
Sketch the venue and keep a working equipment estimate
Site Planner is a separate add-on that is still developing. It combines a 2D venue sketch, a 3D hang reference, fixture quantities, unit prices, power, and weight. It can help with an early plan and client conversation, but it is not the core of the rental workflow yet.

Assign a supported USB interface, Art-Net, or sACN per universe.
Questions that come up in practice
Common questions
Will a tag-based effect work on a different fixture model?
It can target the same role on the new rig, such as wash or beam. Unilighter applies controls that the tagged fixtures expose; a fixture without a matching property simply cannot reproduce that part of the effect.
Can Site Planner produce an equipment total for a quote?
Yes. Site Planner tracks fixture quantities, unit prices, totals, power, and weight alongside the 2D venue plan and 3D hang view. You can print or export the result for a client.
Can I import fixture profiles instead of building them by hand?
Yes. Use Import in the Fixture Library or the Add Device dialog to search Open Fixture Library, QLC+, the DDF Library, and Avolites D4 by manufacturer or fixture name, preview converted modes, and save a native Unilighter profile. Open Fixture Library is recommended when more than one library defines the same fixture. You can also import Open Fixture Library JSON or QLC+ .qxf files. Review the channel mapping before connecting output. Other console formats such as grandMA, GDTF, and Lightkey remain on the roadmap. See the Fixture Editor Guide.
Do I need to install drivers for my DMX interface?
Usually, no. Most supported USB DMX interfaces work directly in the browser. Plug the interface in, select it in Unilighter, and start controlling lights. Some operating systems and interface models need a driver or system setting, as detailed in the Hardware Compatibility Guide and OS Drivers Manual.
Is a browser-based console fast enough for live shows?
Yes. Standard DMX hardware runs at about 40 frames per second, while Unilighter processes control updates internally at 60 frames per second. This leaves enough headroom for cue triggers, audio-reactive control, and live color changes.
Can I use Unilighter at venues with spotty or no internet?
Yes. Once loaded, the console can keep working offline and the project remains stored locally on the device. Cloud synchronization resumes when an internet connection becomes available.
What is the difference between Free and Pro?
Free includes the project-building tools and real DMX hardware testing, but continuous DMX output stops after 30 minutes. Reopen the project to continue testing. Pro removes the session limit and supports uninterrupted production use.
